Woman killed in Mountain View traffic crash

A 32-year-old Pahoa woman was killed early Friday evening in a traffic collision on Volcano Highway (Highway 11) near the 21-mile marker in Mountain View.

A 32-year-old Pahoa woman was killed early Friday evening in a traffic collision on Volcano Highway (Highway 11) near the 21-mile marker in Mountain View.

She’s identified in a police log as Crystal Mercado-Lopez.

According to a Fire Department statement, responders were called to the scene at about 5 p.m. and found Mercado-Lopez’s small compact sedan and an Ford F-150 pickup truck, both with extensive front-end damage.

Mercado-Lopez was extricated from her car by an off-duty fire captain, who performed CPR to no avail.

The pickup’s driver, identified in the log as 48-year-old Kevin McGuire of Mountain View, was uninjured.

A negligent homicide investigation has been opened.

An infant child in a car seat in the sedan was taken to Hilo Medical Center. No information was given on the child’s condition.

Police closed Highway 11 in both directions for several hours and traffic was detoured through Fern Acres subdivision.
